The Heart of UX - The Way of the Connected Researcher

The Heart of UX guides the researcher into deeper states of connection, with their participants, their peers, and most importantly, themselves. It affirms that, at its roots, UX is about connection - and that the most immediate means of connection are made relationally - person to person. Establishing and skillfully maintaining these connections leads directly to grounded, authentic insights that then translate into more meaningful and useful products.

It helps one to become a "Connected Researcher" - one who moves with passion and fluidity, mastering the art of insightful, meaningful research. It presents specific principles, techniques, and real-world examples from the field. It is based on our 20+ years of research experience, as well as our studies in mindfulness, somatic psychology, neuroscience, and physics.

WHO WE ARE

We are Jessica Steinbomer and Jon-Eric Steinbomer, co-founders of Progress UX Research in Austin, Texas.

Researcher, Teacher, Coach, and Author

With over 15 years of experience in the field of UX Research, Jessica leads workshops, trainings, and retreats that focus on connection and work-life balance to bring whole-person wellness to the UX industry.

What has differentiated our approach to research is our emphasis is establishing and maintaining meaningful, authentic connections with our research participants, ourselves, each other, and our clients. In addition to our experience in the industry, we have extensive training in mindfulness techniques, somatic psychology, and the neuroscience of connection, all of which have greatly informed our research projects, and now this new offering.

Researcher, Strategist, Coach, and Author

I help people find patterns. As an author and teacher, I help UX teams to build a mature, effective, and well-connected user research practice.

During our practice as UX Research Professionals, we have seen the far-reaching, tangible effects of integrating these skills into our research work. Participants leave our sessions energized, feeling understood, and refreshed. Our clients give accolades for the unique depth of data we collect, and the valuable insight our process brings. And we ourselves are nourished, enlivened and happy human beings. We attribute this to connection and the basic joy it brings.

From this, the Heart of UX was born.

“The Heart of the UX was hands-down the most impactful UX workshop I participated in. Jon-Eric and Jessica did a fantastic job of stripping down user interviewing to its most fundamental principle: empathy. I use the techniques I learned from them every time I speak with a research participant.”
